What can I do to Conserver Energy

Save energy – Save money:
Energy saving is the place to start – there are many things you can do now……

View our Energy Questionnaire (November 2006) and results by clicking here

Use energy saving materials & technologies – for example:

  • Insulation of lofts, walls and windows.
  • Low energy bulbs.
  • Low energy rated appliances (‘A’ rated)

Culture & Attitudes:
There is a need to encourage changes in habit(see link to Understanding Habit in useful downloads). We all have a responsibility to influence the people around us – at home and in the work-place.

The sort of things we can do is to GET INTO THE HABIT of:

  • Switching off unnecessary lights
  • Switching off unnecessary stand-by power
  • Using less hot water (in the bathroom, in the washing machine etc)
  • Wearing sufficient clothing so that we can leave the central heating 1 or 2°C cooler
  • Avoiding unnecessary car journeys

It’s criminal to waste energy!
Go to the “Energy Saving Trust” web site (link on left) for many, many more ideas!

Did you know that if five low energy bulbs were fitted in each of the island’s 60,000 homes, assuming they were switched on for an average of 3.5 hours a day, they would save 18 % more energy than is predicted (by the developers) to come from the Wellow wind farm. What’s more the savings from low energy bulbs would be reliable and predictable.

Also, the cost of low energy light bulbs would be less than 5% per cent of the public funded incentives, which would be paid to the company operating the wind turbines. (This assumes the 30% claimed power output from the turbines and the current incentive of £53/MWh generated, through the Renewable Obligations scheme - which is paid for ultimately by the public through higher electricity bills.)

We can relax now….Not really, as there’s is always something more we can do (or some new effective idea to take on) and if we relax too much we will end up in the pink square again. The trick is to recognise when that “dumb, fat and happy” stage is coming again and to avoid staying there for long and to move off round the cycle again!

Good luck!
